One day, I got a message from GRIST aka Mat Blackwell if I wanted to collaborate on a track for Sombre Sonik's 20th Dark Ambient Anthology. Ever since coming across Mat's work via the Make It Up Club online series, I've been really impressed by the sheer creativeness of his processes and his willingness to push sonic boundaries, so I gladly jumped on board.
For this collaboration, I recorded a doom-inspired guitar instrumental, accompanied with sounds of my garage banging in the wind. I recorded this while Melbourne was in the midst of a lockdown, so I thought about how it might feel to be stuck and besieged by an unseen enemy. GRIST did his magic looping rituals with that track and other materials, resulting in these four darkly-sparkling gems.
Here is THE BESIEGED - equal mixes of angst and defiance. Perfect for those stormy days.
